How can you judge window quality?
Efficiency
One of the most important attributes for window quality is energy efficiency. Here’s what goes into that:
U-Factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient
First, energy efficiency is most commonly compared using two measurements: U-Factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient. U-Factor measures the rate of heat loss through the window. The lower the U-Factor, the more efficient the window is. U-Factors normally range between .2 and 1.3. The Solar Heat Gain Coefficient measures the solar radiation that passes from outside to the inside of your home. It is measured on a scale of 0 to 1. The lower the number, the more efficient the window is. The federal government’s ENERGY STAR rating system is largely based on these two measurements.
Insulated Glass
Quality windows have multi-paned, insulated glass. The thickness between the glass improves the window’s energy efficiency. A half inch between panes is good — but ¾” is better. Some window manufacturers use dehydrated air between the panes. Higher quality windows use argon gas, which is heavier and better insulating.
Weather Stripping
Weather stripping is installed between the various moving parts of your windows. On a double-hung window, weather stripping is the fuzzy-looking material between the window sash and the frame. Weather stripping allows the sash to slide up and down while maintaining a tight fit, designed to prevent air from leaking in or out. Look for thick weather stripping that is continuous around the window.
UV Protection
Quality windows use a reflective coating on the glass called Low E coating. This protects fabrics inside your house — like carpets and furniture — from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
Ease of Use
Buy windows that operate smoothly and are easy to clean. Check to make sure the windows open and close seamlessly and that the lock system is easy to operate.
Both sashes of a double-hung window should have mechanisms that allow them to tip in for easy cleaning.
Warranty
Read and understand the warranty. If a company is willing to stand behind their product, it probably says something about its quality! Some manufacturers even offer lifetime warranties.
Find out if the warranty covers all parts of the window, such as the frame, components, and glass. Is the warranty transferable? How long does it include labor in case something needs to be fixed?
